Original Moroccan art by Noureddine Ouarhim, Essaouira
Noureddine Ouarhim is a contemporary Moroccan artist born in 1992 in Ida Ougourd, in the Haha region of Essaouira province. A graduate of the Institut National des Beaux-Arts in Tétouan, he lives and works in Essaouira. He turned early to raw natural materials: earth, barley grain, bark and roots became his materials of choice. His works layer matter on the canvas and pair disciplined drawing with a reflection on memory, belonging and Amazigh roots. This gallery brings together a selection of his paintings, mixed-media works, lithographs and drawings. Materials and techniques
Noureddine Ouarhim works with raw natural materials: earth, barley grain, bark and tree roots. These are layered onto the canvas, where they give the surface its relief and texture. Set against that matter is a disciplined drawing practice, in charcoal above all. His work spans painting, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, lithography, land art and installation. These materials and gestures carry a reflection on memory, belonging, roots and Amazigh identity.
